Axum or Aksum is a town in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia with a population of 66,800 residents. It is the site of the historic capital of the Aksumite Empire. It was a naval and trading power that ruled the region from about 400 BC into the 10th century. The empire was at its height under King Ezana, who was converted to Christianity in the 4th century.
